THE Kitchens at Robina Town Centre have received a healthy dose of Vitamin Bee with the unveiling of their urban honeybee apiary.
Consisting of 36 hives and a 10-metre-long bee highway, the apiary is the largest publicly visible, urban apiary in Australia.
Jack Stone, lead apiarist at Bee One Third — Neighbourhood Honey, said the apiary was a game-changer for the conservation of the worldwide bee population.
“One third of the world’s food supply is pollinated by the honey bee,” he said.
“So as the bee population continues to decline, it’s imperative that companies look for innovative ways to tackle this issue and contribute to the future of our food biodiversity.
“This is especially relevant in urban areas where the bees are being driven away.”
Over one million bees will produce in excess of 2.5 tonnes of honey a year, which will be used by tenants at The Kitchens and available for purchase by customers.
“A venture of this magnitude is like nothing we’ve seen before in Australia,” Mr Stone said.
“To be able to introduce over one million bees into the local environment will not only boost natural pollination for local farmers and backyard growers, but it will ultimately also result in the increased production of their crops, while also strengthening local pollinator numbers.
“We’re so proud to play a part in the full circle production of locally grown food in conjunction with The Kitchens.”
