Carpenters Carve Out A fortune On The Gold Coast

CARPENTERS are cleaning up on the Gold Coast, with new data showing the city is the most profitable part of Queensland for that trade.

Figures from find-a-tradie website ServiceSeeking.com.au show less competition for building jobs on the Coast than anywhere else in the state.

“Carpenters can find their fortune on the Coast, where there is a shortage of chippies,” the site’s CEO, Jeremy Levitt said.

Gold Coast qualified carpenter and licensed builder James George, 33, said he was not surprised by the figures.

Mr George, who owns Highlife Homes, has multiple projects on the go including four Coolangatta townhouses, a near-complete Paradise Island duplex, a house build in Nerang and 12-townhouse project starting in Tweed Heads soon.

“There is plenty of work on the Gold Coast for good carpenters,” he said, adding the hard part for employers was finding “good, loyal, hardworking ones”.

Mr George said it was difficult to secure a carpentry apprenticeship because positions attracted floods of applications.

“It’s a tough game to get into but once you are in and producing good work then a job is pretty easy to find,” he said.

Mr George said carpenters’ earning power ranged between $30 to $50 per hour depending on skills and experience.
