GOLD flecked tiles, timber panelling and vivid yellow ceiling features – the key Commonwealth Games Sport and Leisure Centre is set to sparkle when the world is watching in less than a year.
This is the public’s first look at the Carrara venue, which formally reached “practical completion” yesterday and is one of the three new sites built for the Games.
Commonwealth Games Minister Kate Jones said the centre was ready to host 1500 badminton players from over 30 countries for the Surdiman Cup – an event that will attract a global television audience of more than 500 million next month.
“We have always said the Gold Coast Sports and Leisure centre would be ready for the world badminton cup,” she said. “It’s great news the venue has officially received practical completion.”
Upgrades to neighbouring Carrara Stadium and Carrara Indoor Stadium are ongoing, along with changes at the hockey centre at Keith Hunt Park in Southport.
More than 180 journalists from across the Commonwealth are set to tour Games venues and other sites today as part of the World Press Briefing . Media will also hear updates on the ceremonies, transport and security.
