THE Gold Coast’s three universities have rocketed up a list of the world’s top learning institutions.
Griffith University came in at No. 35 on the ranking of the world’s top 200 young universities while Bond and Southern Cross universities entered the list for the first time.
Both are in the 101-150 bracket of universities which have operated for less than 50 years while Griffith’s position improved from 48 last year.
The strong showing in the Times Higher Education rankings has been hailed as a big win for the Gold Coast and further evidence the city is establishing itself as an education hotspot, with the industry worth more than $1.4 billion to the local economy.
Study Gold Coast chief executive Shannon Willoughby said the result was “a great day for the Gold Coast” .
“It is impressive to see Griffith move up and great to see the others enter for the first time,” she said.
“It shows the Gold Coast is charging ahead as a global city with quality education services which underpin that.”
The rankings, which increased to 200 this year from 150, used 13 performance indicators which are also used to rank the world’s best universities , but altered to give less weight to reputation.
Institutions must demonstrate high standards of performance across teaching, research, international outlook and knowledge transfer.
Switzerland’s École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne topped the list for the third year in a row. Griffith University Vice Chancellor and President Ian O’Connor said the result highlighted the work put into teaching and research .
“It is also the product of hard work by all our staff, students , alumni and partners which combine to produce remarkable outcomes,” he said.
Bond University Vice Chancellor and President, Professor Tim Brailsford, welcomed the news.
“This result places us in excellent company which is good news for the Gold Coast,” he said. “As a young, small and independent university, Bond thinks outside the square and has the flexibility to quickly adapt to the changing world we live in, which are skills we equip our students with.”
Southern Cross Vice Chancellor Professor Adam Shoemaker said he was pleased by the rankings.
“Southern Cross is clearly one of the fastest-rising young universities in the top 150 bracket,” he said. “That is no surprise. Our wide-ranging research – from citizen science to marine science, from osteopathy to organics – is both distinctive and important.”
