LEADING businesswoman Rebecca Frizelle has been appointed to the board of developer Sunland in a move hailed as ‘historic’ by the company’s founder.
The former Gold Coast Titans chairwoman has been named to the six-member board and will oversee a ‘milestone’ year for the company as it launches eight projects worth more than $3 billion.
Ms Frizelle, who is currently part of a consortium to buy the NRL club said she was ‘excited’ to lend her experience to the company behind the iconic Q1 tower.
“Soheil (Abedian) challenges me to think differently and gives me advice and this will let me bring my different skill set and experience to the role,” she said.
“There are a lot of challenges ahead but this is a company which has seen the ups and downs of the Coast since it started in 1983.”
Sunland will mark its 35th year next year and will push ahead with several projects including a four-tower resort on Greenmount Hill overlooking some of the city’s most famous surf breaks, The Lakes at Mermaid Waters, a $200 million Hedges Ave tower, Magnoli at Palm Beach and One Marine at Labrador.
Mr Abedian, Sunland’s executive director, said Ms Frizelle was the first woman appointed to the board and hoped she would be the first if many.
“A sign of maturity in a company is gender equality and I hope that one day we will have more female than male board members,” he said.
“That direction, which we are going in, is far more important than a purely economic one.
“The direction of this board is not short-term but about the long-term.”
