HIGH rises are in but service stations are out as far as the Gold Coast City Council is concerned.
The council’s planning committee yesterday recommended twin 40-storey unit towers on the western side of the Gold Coast Hwy at Cannes Ave but gave the thumbs down to a new service station in Ferry Rd.
Surfers Paradise councillor Gary Baildon objected to the service station, proposed for a site across the road from the Ferry Road Tavern because, he said, it was out of character for the area.
This was despite there already being a service station adjacent to the tavern.
In all, the committee gave preliminary approval for more than 1000 new bedrooms in five developments across the city.
The largest was the twin-tower proposal — one 49 storeys and the other of 43 — on the Gold Coast Hwy site.
The towers will have a cafe and shops and four levels of basement car parking.
The towers will have more than 739 bedrooms across 391 apartments.
A second Surfers Paradise development will soon reach upwards as well, with a nine-storey building set for Sunrise Blvd.
The Konopol Investments development will have two penthouse apartments for permanent living with the remaining 18 units for holiday rentals.
In the city’s north, at Kopps Rd, Oxenford, two parcels were subdivided into 45 separate lots for homes.
Planning committee chairman Cameron Caldwell said the developer had wanted 49 lots but the council had removed four to help conserve koala habitat.
The council also approved two aged care facilities — one with 56 units on Bundall Rd and a 65 units home as a part of the first stage of a 322-unit complex in Allchurch Avenue, Benowa.
“We have seen two approvals for aged-care facilities which references the growing needs for our ageing population,” Cr Caldwell said.
The committee chairman said the approvals were a positive for the city.
“The committee’s recommendations reference a high level of activity on the back of a very positive situation in the development sector,” he said.
The developments go before the full council for final approval tomorrow.
