PINDARA Private Hospital will boast one of the largest private emergency departments in the country after a $12 million revamp is completed this month.
The emergency department has tripled in size and increased its bed capacity from 19 to 27 as stage three of a four-stage redevelopment of the Benowa facility wraps up this year.
Pindara director of emergency medicine, Dr Ben Walters , said the upgrades to the ED and to South Coast Radiology Pindara included cardiac monitoring for all acute beds, a large undercover ambulance bay and larger treatment areas and corridors for ease of access and patient comfort.
“We were working in a space that we probably thought was substandard for our patients,” he said.
“It’s a very customer-focused department. The ethos was to provide emergency patients with a level of comfort and a level of customer service that wasn’t available.
“Over the years as everyone else has moved on with rebuilds, with current standards we felt our patients weren’t really getting what they deserved and we thought that they could be more comfortable and that would allow us to care for them better.”
Dr Walters said the revamp would not only allow Pindara staff to offer emergency care that rivalled the best in the world but also helped the hospital respond to demand for more health care services on the Gold Coast.
“We’ve now got the capacity to increase our client base,” he said.
The first two stages of the hospital’s upgrade included a five-level specialist suites tower, the 120-bed Dr David Lindsay wing, a carpark and a kitchen.
Dr Walters said the most exciting new features to the Pindara ED were educational and administrative spaces that will be used to help train new health professionals under an arrangement with the Australasian College of Emergency Medicine.
He said Pindara had long focused on maintaining a level of comfort for its patients and said the revamp would contribute to the improved customer experience.
“When you go to the emergency department, it’s probably one of the more stressful moments of your life,” he said.
“That’s all part of relieving the anxiety that can be experienced.
“That’s our driver.”
