Family Man Scott Still Dreaming Of World Domination

ADAM Scott used to say becoming world No.1 was “more of a dream than a goal” .

Yet having climbed the mountain once before , the Gold Coaster knows what it will take to return to the top of the tree and believes “the door is definitely open” next year given no one figure is dominating the game.

Golf took a back seat for much of this year for Scott as he and wife Marie welcomed their second child, Byron – a baby brother for their daughter Bo, 2 – in August.

However Scott, who will tee of this morning in the opening round of the Australian PGA Championship, will return to his usual schedule next year and says he can again reach top.

“Although guys played a lot of great golf this year, I think with so many different guys up there, there’s a real opportunity to be one of them,” he said. “There isn’t dominance at the moment and the door is definitely open.

“I just need to put myself back in that position to take advantage when it comes.” Physically, Scott believes he can reproduce the golf that helped him become the first Australian to win a coveted US Masters title in 2013. The challenge will come in finding the balance between the driven player that reached No.1 in 2014 and the family man he wants to be. “For me, the challenge is just the demands on your time,” Scott said. “That’s not external, that’s from myself. I want to be with my family as much as I can and spend time with the kids. “But I also know what it takes for me to play really good golf. “It’s going to be finding the peace between that battle of where I put my priorities. “Rather than me being switched on all the time, I’m probably going to have to learn to switch on and off and really compartmentalise those two parts of my life.”

“Physically, there’s nothing stopping me from getting back to the top, it’s just about finding that nice balance in life,” said Scott, who tees off at 6.10am today, meaning a 3.30am wake-up call to be at his best for a tournament dear to his heart.

Scott first lifted the Joe Kirkwood Cup in 2013, in a virtual four-day hometown celebration of his Masters victory.

A repeat this week will be more difficult.

“Since the US PGA, really the focus hasn’t been on the golf at all,” Scott said. “That shows up when you go and play in world-class fields, there’s no doubt.

“And it’s good for me to see that because it’s very clear for me going back next year, exactly what I need to do.”

Frustration has been a natural by-product and Scott is sure to face more of that over the next four days on the Gold Coast if he strays from the fairways on a Royal Pines course he believes is maturing after what he called “drastic and shocking” changes to the course.”
