Magic Millions Polo A Drawcard In Itself

MAGIC Millions organisers are betting on the unbridled rise of polo in Australia as they look to harness more growth for the Gold Coast event.

After a hugely successful inaugural event last year, Magic Millions have recruited as a team captain the much-photographed polo player Ignacio ‘Nacho’ Figueras , whose face has graced billboards and the pages of fashion magazines as a face of Ralph Lauren.

The polo, held at Doug Jennings Park at Main Beach, will kick off the week’s events on Sunday, January 7, ahead of the famous barrier draw and exclusive beachfront launch party on the Tuesday and the first of the yearling sales on the Wednesday.

The $10 million Magic Millions Raceday will bring in the big crowds on the Saturday.

Magic Millions co-owner Katie Page said polo would be the focus of the next phase of growth for the event.

“We wanted to make it a full-on week and we’ve been bringing the other equestrian parts into this and polo was an obvious choice,” she said.

“After our polo event last year, the jockeys and the trainers got on to us and said ‘what about us?’ so this year we’ve got a third game with jockeys versus trainers.

“That’s pretty much what we do, we grow these events and we bring more and more people to the Gold Coast.

“It’s just growing that event all the time and making sure that people have enough to do on the Gold Coast, even if they’ve not been in racing before or polo before, it brings them into that industry.”

Also taking the field will be former jockey and racing commentator Francesca Cumani, as well equestrian Olympian and 16th in line for the British throne Zara Tindall.

Ms Cumani is a highlyaccomplished polo player, Ms Page said, and “Zara is no slouch either” and the games are excellent spectator sports.

“The girls got the most applause last year, everyone turned up to see the girls playing,” Ms Page said.

Ms Page, and her husband and Magic Millions co-owner Gerry Harvey, were on the Gold Coast yesterday to announce a three-year renewal of the carnival’s broadcast deal with Channel 7.

Tickets are available now from $35 per person.
